Steps:
3.2 Step 2: Preparation of 4-(bromomethyl)-2, 6-dimethyl-pyridine
(2,6-dimethyl-4-pyridyl)methanol (0.50 g, 3.6 mmol) in HBr (4.0 mL of a 33% solution in glacial acetic acid, 22 mmol, 6.0 equiv.) were heated at reflux for 5 h. After cooling, the mixture was concentrated in vacuum, poured onto ice-water and made alkaline with NaOH (20% in water). The resulting mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate and combined organic layers were washed with water, brine, and dried over Na2SC>4. After concentration in vacuum, the title compound (0.62 g, 85%) was obtained. (0106) 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCI3): 2.53 (s, 6H), 4.33 (s, 2H), 6.97 (s, 2H).
