4-Bromo phenol (80.0 g) was dissolved in dichloroethane (DCE) (1.12 L₅). Bu₄N⁺Bf (2.98 g, 0.02 eq) was added to the solution, followed by the 5N NaOH (0.480 L,). The biphasic mixture was warmed to 85 ⁰C with stirring for 15 hours. The mixture was cooled to 22.0 ⁰C and transferred to a separation funnel. The layers were separated. The organic layer was evaporated to a white solid (95% pure) in 96.3% yield (104.8 g).; Synthesis of aryl bromide 1 1-1 :5N NaOH (0.48 L) was added to a solution of 19a (80.0 g) and Bu₄N⁺Br (2.98, 0.02 equiv) in DCE (1.12 L). The mixture was warmed to 85 ⁰C for 15h, then cooled to ambient temperature. The organic layer was separated, concentrated and flushed with heptane (2 x 240 mL). The chloride 19b was obtained as a 95%wt white solid in 96.3% yield (104.8 g).
