Steps:

Typical procedure for the denitrative etherification of 4-nitrobenzonitrile with ethanol
General procedure: A mixture of 4-nitrobenzonitrile (0.5 mmol), NaOH (4 mmol), and absolute ethanol (2 mmol) were mixed in DMF (3 mL) under white LED irradiation in air atmosphere at 25 °C. The progress of reaction was monitored by thin layer chromatography (TLC). After the completion of reaction, the product was extracted with ethyl acetate/water. The solvent was evaporated leaving the crude product, which was purified by column chromatography over silica gelusing n-hexane/ethyl acetate (8:2) as the eluent. 4-Ethoxybenzonitrile (3a): 24 Yellow solid; 1H NMR(300 MHz, CDCl3) δ; 1.48 (t, J = 7.0 Hz, 3 H), 4.11 (q,J = 7.0 Hz, 2 H), 6.96 (dd, J = 7.0 Hz, J = 1.9 Hz, 2 H), 7.61 (dd,J = 6.9 Hz, J = 2.0 Hz, 2 H); 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3) δ;29.73, 63.94, 103.76, 115.16, 119.31, 133.99, 162.28.
