A. 5-Methyl-4-hydroxymethylimidazole To a suspension of lithium aluminum hydride (5.4 g, 142 mmol) in THF (200 mL) at 0°C was added ethyl 4-methylimidazole-5-carboxylate (15.4 g, 100 mmol) in portions as a slurry in THF (100 mL). The solution was stirred 24 hours at room temperature, concentrated HCl was added and the organic solvent was evaporated. Absolute ethanol was added, and the mixture was heated to boiling and filtered hot through Celite. The filtrate was evaporated to afford 23 g of Compound 1 (>>100%) as a brown semisolid. ¹³C (CD₃0D) 9.27, 53.94, 127.92, 130.10, 133.67 ppm.
