Steps:

4.2 General procedure for iron-catalyzed decarboxylative methylation of cinnamic acid
General procedure: A mixture of cinnamic acid (0.3mmol), DTBP (0.6mmol), FeCl3 (20mol%), and DMSO (2mL) in a Schlenk tube was stirred under an argon atmosphere at 130°C for 12h. After that the mixture was poured into ethyl acetate, then washed with water, extracted with ethyl acetate, dried by anhydrous Na2SO4, then filtered, and evaporated under vacuum, the residue was purified by flash column chromatography (petroleum ether or petroleum ether/ethyl acetate) to afford the corresponding coupling products.
