To a cooled (-78°C) solution of methoxybenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid (1 g) was added DIBAL (30 mL, 1 M in THF). After stirring for 20 min, the mixture was warmed to RT and stirred for 4 hr, then poured into sat. NH4CI (aq) (35 mL). After stirring at RT for 20 min, 6M HCI (aq) was added and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc, the organic phase dried and then concentrated in vacuo. Purification by silica gel chromatography (EtOAc-hexane, 3: 7) afforded the alcohol as a solid (0.4 g, 97%).
