Steps:

Substituted aniline (7b) (4.5g, 40.1mmol) and PPA (240mL) was heated to 80°C, ethyl acetoacetate (6.3g, 47.8mmol) was added drop wise for 45min and heated to 120°C for 16h.Completion of the reaction was monitored by TLC. The RM was poured over crushed ice and neutralized with aqueous ammonia (25%); solid precipitated was filtered, washed with diethyl ether and dried. The pure compounds were isolated by column chromatography using silica gel 230-400, eluting with 20% ethyl acetate in hexane.
