To a solution of 5-hydroxyindanone (1.5 g, 10 mmol) in 15 ml trifluroracetic acid was added sodium azide (1.0 g, 15 mmol) portionwise. The solution was stirred at reflux for 2 h, then cooled and diluted with water. The volatiles were removed in vacuo and the resulting residue diluted with saturated NaHCO₃and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were dried over MgSO₄and concentrated to yield 11-1 (1.6 g, 98%) as a tan solid which was used without further purification.
