79.1 Step 1: 7-methylchroman-4-one (441-2)

A mixture of Compound 441-1 (500mg, 2.8 mmol) and PPA (5 mL) was stirred at 100°C for 15 min. TLC showed the reaction was completed. The reaction mixture was poured into H₂O and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc (10mL x 4). The combined organic layers were washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (20mL), dried and evaporated to give Compound 441- 2 (440 mg, 2.7 mmol, 98% yield) as yellow oil.
