Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: 1-(4-ethyl-3-nitrophenyl)ethan-1-onewith water;iron;acetic acid at 80 - 90; for 1.5 h;Heating / reflux;
Stage #2: with ammonia in water; pH=7 - 8;

Step 3. A solution of 1 -(4-ethyl-3-nitrophenyl) ethanone (10 g, 49.17 mmol, prepared as described in Step 2 above) in acetic acid (10 mL) was added in several portions to a mixture of iron (8.2 g, 146.82 mmol) in water (100 mL), while warming the mixture to a temperature of 80-90 0C. The resulting solution was maintained at reflux for 1.5 hr. The mixture was adjusted to pH 7-8 by the addition of ammonia (28 %) and was filtered. The product was extracted with methylene chloride and the organic layers were combined, washed with brine, dried (anhydrous Na2SO-I), filtered, and concentrated to afford 8.6 g (91 % yield) of l-(3-amino-4-ethylphenyl) ethanone as a yellow liquid.
