Reaction Conditions:

with pyridine;dmap in tetrahydrofuran at 20; for 13 h;Inert atmosphere;

Steps:

Typical procedure I: synthesis of dialkyl oxalate

General procedure: To an oven-dried 200-mL two-neck round-bottomed flask equipped with magnetic stir bar were addedN,N’-dimethylaminopyridine (183 mg, 1.5 mmol), pyridine (4.84 mL, 60 mmol), ROH (60 mmol),and THF (200 mL). Oxalyl chloride (3.3 mL, 30 mmol) was added dropwise to the solution. Afterstirring at room temperature for 13 h, the reaction mixture was diluted with H2O (100 mL) andextracted with Et2O (3 × 50 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with saturated aq.NaHCO3 (100 mL), water (100 mL), brine (100 mL), and dried over MgSO4, and then filtered andconcentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatographyto give the corresponding dialkyl oxalate.
