A stirred solution of ethyl 7-chloro-4-hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylate (78, 10.0 g, 39.7 mol) in phosphorus(V) oxychloride (80.0 mL , 854 mmol ) was heated to 110°C and stirred for 3 hours at 110°C. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and excess solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The resulting solid was dissolved in ethyl acetate, washed with water and brine solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and filtered. Excess solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to yield ethyl 4,7-dichloroquinoline-3-carboxylate (79, 8.0 g, 29.6 mmol, 75.56%) as a pale yellow colored solid. LCMS (ES+): m/z 272 [M + H]+
