Steps:

A11.1 Step 1: Methyl 3,5-dihydroxy-4-methylbenzoate

A mixture solution of 3,5-dihydroxy-4-methylbenzoic acid (4.7 g, 27.9 mmol) and H2504 (1.0 mL) in methanol (50 mL) was stirred at 60 °C for overnight. Then the mixture solution was concentrated and the residue was dissolved in EA (100 mL), washed with saturated NaHCO3 solution (100 mL x 3), dried over Na2504, filtered and concentrated to give the product (4.93 g, 96.8%). MS (ESI, m/e) [M+1] 183.1.
