Stage #1: 4-bromo-anilinewith sodium acetate;acetic acid in water at 5;
Stage #2: 2-chloropropionyl chloride at 0 - 20;
Steps:
General procedure for synthesis of aromatic β-chloropropionamides 5a-f
General procedure: The recrystallized aromatic amines (0.05 mol) were dissolved in a mixture of glacial acetic acid (25mL) and saturated solution of sodium acetate (25mL) and cooled to 5°C. To this, β-chloropropionyl chloride (6.2 mL,0.075 mol) was added drop wise at 0-5°C with constant stirring. Then the reaction mixture was left at RT for 5-6 hr and the crude product that separated was filtered, washed with 50% acetic acid and cold water and recrystallized from suitable solvent. The physical data of the compounds are given in Table II.
