Reaction Conditions:

Steps:

Alkyldimethylamines 8a-c
General procedure: Bromoalkanes 7 (bromohexane (7a) 2.3 mol; bromooctane(7b) 1.9 mol; bromodecane (7c) 1.6 mol; 1 eq)were mixed with toluene (300 mL) in a 3 L autoclave. Then40% N,N-dimethylamine (6) solution in water (500 mL,approx. 2 eq) was added. An excess amount of NaOH (200mL) was added as a 50% aqueous solution. The mixtureswere stirred and heated to 60 °C for 3 days. After the reactionwas completed the reaction mixture separated in twolayers. The organic phase containing products was separatedfrom water phase and concentrated under reducedpressure. The products were washed several times with water(5 × 20 mL) and distilled under reduced pressure toensure separation from inorganic byproducts and to removetoluene (8a 70%, 8b 90%, 8c 95%). While amine 8ccan be dried on a vacuum line with minimal loss due toevaporation, the distillation results in better overall yield.The presence of toluene in product is not problematic, as itis removed in the following steps.
