Steps:

Synthesis of benzimidazoles (3) and benzothiazoles (6)

General procedure: In 50 mL round bottom flask, o-phenlylenediamine (2) or o-aminothiophenol 5 (1 mmol) and aldehyde 1 (1 mmol) were thoroughly mixed with 5 mL of water/ethanol (1:1). To this 100 mg Amberlite IRA-400 Cl was added and stirred for the appropriate period of time (20-40 min). After the completion of the reaction (TLC monitoring), the catalyst was separated by filtration and washed with 15 mL ethyl acetate. The filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure, the resulting solid product was recrystallized from ethanol to afford pure products 3 (Scheme-I) and 6 (Scheme-II). The compounds which are not crystalizes well were purified using column chromatography.
