1-[3-ethyl-4-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl]ethan-1-one: To a solution of 1-[3-ethenyl- 4-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl]ethan-1-one (5 g, 28.41 mmol, 1.00 equiv.) in ethanol (20 mL), Palladium carbon (1 g) was added. The mixture was purged with H2. The mixture was stirred for 3 h at 20 oC. The reaction was monitored by LCMS. Then the solids were filtered out. The filtrate was concentrated to afford 4.5 g (89%) of 1-[3-ethyl-4- (hydroxymethyl)phenyl]ethan-1-one as white oil. LC-MS: m/z = 179 [M+H]+.
