Uses
This is the sodium salt form of Benzenemethanol. Sodium Benzyloxide is used to desulfurize coal.
Preparation
Sodium Benzyloxide usually formed in situ by the reaction of sodium with neat benzyl alcohol or by the reaction of NaH with 1.0 equiv of benzyl alcohol in an ethereal solvent.
Precautions
Avoid contact of the neat salt or solutions with the eyes, skin, and clothing; carry out preparation and conduct reactions under an inert nitrogen or argon atmosphere. Use in a fume hood.
