Definition

Dodecene: a straight-chain alkene,CH₃(CH₂)₉CH:CH₂, obtained from petroleumand used in making dodecylbenzene.

General Description

A colorless liquid. Less dense than water and insoluble in water. Vapors are heavier than air. May irritate skin and eyes, and may be narcotic in high concentrations. Used to make other chemicals.

Highly flammable. Insoluble in water.

Reactivity Profile

Propylene tetramer may react vigorously with strong oxidizing agents. May react exothermically with reducing agents to release hydrogen gas. In the presence of various catalysts (such as acids) or initiators, may undergo exothermic addition polymerization reactions.

No inhalation hazard expected. Aspiration hazard if ingested. Low skin and eye irritation.

Safety Profile

Low toxicity by ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. Probably irritating and narcotic in high concentration. Flammable or combustible when exposed to heat or flame; can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use foam, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
