수산화마그네슘 C화학적 특성, 용도, 생산
순도시험
(1) 유리알칼리 및 가용성염류 : 이 품목 2g에 물 100mL를 가하여 수욕중에서 5분간 가열한 다음 즉시 여과하고 식힌 후에 여액 50mL를 취하여 0.1N 황산으로 적정 할 때, 소비된 양이 2mL를 초과하여서는 아니 된다(지시약 : 메틸레드시액). 여액 25mL를 취하여 수욕중에서 증발건고한 다음 105℃에서 3시간 건조할 때, 그 양은 10mg 이하이어야 한다.
(2) 납 : 「메타인산나트륨」의 순도시험 (2)에 따라 시험한다(2.0ppm 이하).
(3) 비소 : 이 품목을 비소시험법에 따라 시험할 때, 그 양은 4.0ppm 이하이어야 한다.
(4) 산화칼슘 : 이 품목 약 0.5g을 정밀히 달아 황산 3mL 및 물 22mL의 혼액에 녹이고 에탄올 50mL를 가하여 하룻밤 정치시킨다. 필요하면 황산마그네슘 결정을 용해시키기 위해서 이 액을 50℃로 가온한다. 미리 묽은황산, 물 및 에탄올로 씻은 다음 강열하여 무게를 잰 유리여과기로 여과하고 2N 황산․에탄올의 혼액(1 : 2)으로 씻는다. 유리여과기를 450±25℃에서 항량이 될 때까지 강열하여 데시케이타중에서 방냉하고 평량하여 황산칼슘량을 구하여 다음 계산식에 따라 함량을 구할 때, 그 양은 1% 이하이어야 한다.
확인시험
이 품목의 수용액(1→20)에 묽은염산을 가한 액은 확인시험법 중 마그네슘염의 반응을 나타낸다.
정량법
미리 105℃에서 2시간 건조한 이 품목 0.4g을 정밀히 달아 1N 황산 25mL를 가하여 완전히 녹인 다음 메틸레드시액을 가하고 1N 수산화나트륨용액으로 과량의 산을 적정한다. 소비된 황산의 양에서 검체에 포함된 산화칼슘에 해당되는 황산의 양을 뺀 양이 수산화마그네슘의 양이다.

Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OHn, also known as magnesium hydrate and brucite, is a white powder that is very slightly soluble in water. It decomposes at 350°C (662 OF). It is used in the extraction of magnesium metal and as a reagent in the sulfite wood pulp process. Magnesium hydroxide is formed by the reaction of sodium hydroxide and a soluble magnesium salt solution. Brucite, a mineral composed of magnesium hydroxide with occasional traces of iron and manganese, is a white to grayish translucent secondary mineral found with serpentine and metamorphic dolomites.물리적 성질
Magnesium Hydroxide decomposes when heated to 360°C and forms the oxide, MgO. It is very slightly soluble in water at 0.00122 g/100 ml and has a solubility product of 5.61×10-12. Crystals of Mg(OH)2 have a refractive index of 1.559. Its heat of formation is –925 kJ/mol with an entropy of 63 J/mol·K.As a suspension in water, it is often called milk of magnesia because of its milk-like appearance. The solid mineral form of magnesium hydroxide is known as “brucite”.
It can be prepared by the metathesis reaction between any soluble magnesium salts and an alkali hydroxide such as sodium or even ammonium:
Mg2+(aq)+2OH-(aq)→Mg(OH)2(solid)
Magnesium hydroxide is a common component of antacids and laxatives. It interferes with the absorption of folic acid and iron. Its low solubility makes it a weak base. Another method of commercial manufacture of magnesium hydroxide involves the chloride obtained from seawater. After the chloride is recrystallized several times to obtain a level of purity, it is calcined at about 1000°C:

The synthesis of magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] is based on a metathesis reaction in which magnesium salts are reacted with sodium or potassium hydroxide.Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) has only limited solubility in water and the resulting suspension is called milk of magnesia, which is commonly used as an antacid and is known to be a mild base.
Magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] is present in antacids because of its laxative properties and is also the main ingredient of the ‘milk of magnesia’. The ‘milk of magnesia’ is a suspension of Mg(OH)2 in water, which has a milk-like appearance because of the low aqueous solubility of Mg(OH)2. It is considered as a strong electrolyte and a weak base and is given to the patient for indigestion and heartburn. The alkaline suspension neutralises any excess stomach acid and therefore works as an antacid. It also stimulates intestinal movement, as the magnesium ions increases the water content in the intestines through its osmotic effect and as a result softens any faeces present.
