Barium stearate Usage And Synthesis
DescriptionBarium stearate is mainly used as a thermo-stabilizer of polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride copolymer, as well as lubricant. There is excellent heat-resistant stability, oilness and processibility for polyvinyl chloride products such as transparent film, leatheroid, hard plate material and tubing. It also can be used for high-temperature resistance, taking off and touching agents and machinery high-temperature lubricant. The method for producing barium stearate is mainly the traditional saponification metathesis process. This method has technical maturity, but water consumption is large, it uses caustic soda, and the high-concentration salt-containing wastewater quantity discharged is large, contaminating the environment. They do not meet the requirements of current energy-saving, environmental protection, and cleaner production. Another method is stearic acid, water, and hydrated barta added in advance after adding the saponification method of sodium hydroxide. The same saponification method of shortcoming. But the product is fluffy, not as saponification double decomposition.
Chemical PropertiesWhite crystalline solid.Insoluble in water or alcohol. Combustible.
UsesWaterproofing agent; lubricant in metalworking, plastics, and rubber; wax compounding; preparation of greases; heat and light stabilizer in plastics.
UsesBarium stearate is not generally used as a stabilizer, but is an important film-calendering lubricant. It is generally used in conjunction with other stabilizers such as Cadmium Stearate and Lead Stearate. It can be used as a flatting and sanding agents in lacquers, coatings and inks and as a drying lubricant for rubbers.
Barium stearate is used in dry - salt fire extinguishers to prevent caking.
Safety ProfileModerately toxic by ingestion. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke andfumes.
SynthesisA production method for barium stearate. The production method comprises the following steps: 1) adding water into a reactor and starting stirring and heating; 2) with water as a reaction dispersion medium and under the conditions of stirring and heating, adding powdery barium hydroxide at normal pressure so as to form a barium hydroxide suspension, then adding subparticle stearic acid while stirring when temperature reaches 50 to 60 ℃, stopping heating when temperature reaches 65 to 66 ℃ and carrying out a reaction for 20 to 30 min when temperature rises to 69 to 70 ℃ caused by reaction exotherm; and 3) subjecting a reaction product to filtering separation, drying and crushing so as to obtain a barium stearate product.
