Steps:

4 6-Amino-3-iodo-5-nitro-1H-pyridin-2-one

6-Amino-3-iodo-5-nitro-1H-pyridin-2-one The pyridinone from above (2.17 g; 14 mmol) was rendered anhydrous by coevaporation with DMF under high vacuum and then resuspended in DMF (50 mL). N-Iodosuccinimide (4.73 g; 21 mmol) was added and the resulting solution was stirred at room temperature in the dark. After 4 days the solution was slowly added to vigorously stirred water (2 L) and the resulting suspension stirred overnight. Filtration and drying over P₂O₅ gave the product as a yellow solid.
