Steps:

1 Step 1: Preparation of 2-chloro-9-methyl-9H-purine

A mixture of 2-chloro-9H-purine (200 mg, 1.30 mmol), K2CO3 (540 mg, 3.9 mmol), and iodomethane (370 mg, 2.6 mmol) was stirred at 0 °C for 2 h. Water (50 mL) was added and the mixture extracted with DCM (3 x 100 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by Prep-HPLC to afford the desired crude material (80 mg, 37%) as a white solid: MS (ES): m/z = 169 (M+H).
