General procedure: To asolution of 4-hydroxybenzylic alcohol derivatives (1.3 mmol) in acetone/H2O(6 mL, V/V = 1:1) was added KOH (2.0 mmol), and then dropwise added iodomethane (2.0 mmol) slowly. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature until the TLC indicated the consumption of the starting material. An appropriate amount of water was added to the reaction, and the aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4,ltered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was puried by flash chromatography (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate 30:1 to 20:1) to give the product 1f-1h. (3,5-Di-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenyl)methanol (1f).6 Compound 1f was prepared from 1a accordingto the general procedure.
