2.3 Catalyst screening studies

General procedure: N-Phenyl-methacrylamide 1 (1mM) (commercially purchased form TCI America) and catalyst 3 were dissolved in benzene in a Pyrex test tube. The reaction mixture was degassed by bubbling nitrogen for 5-10min. The resultant solution was then irradiated in a Rayonet reactor equipped with ~300nm light bulbs at 10±2°C for 12h. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography on a chiral stationary phase to ascertain the enantiomeric excess in the photoproduct.
