b) 4-(2-Methylpyridyl)acetonitrile; To 10 mL of DMSO solution containing 1.7 g of sodium cyanide, 3 mL of DMSO solution containing 2.46 g of 4-chloromethyl-2-methylpyridine was added under cooling with ice, and stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. After addition of water, the reaction solution was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate extract was washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and removed of the solvent by reduced pressure distillation to provide 1.86 g (yield: 80%) of the title compound which was a reddish brown, oily substance. 1H-NMR(CDCl3)δ:8.43(d,J=5.0Hz,1H),7.22(s,1H), 7.16(d,J=5.0Hz,1H),4.08(s,2H),2.47(s,3H) Mass,m/e:132(M+,base)
