Potassium carbonate (7.8 g, 56.4 mmol) was added to a solution of 1,2,3- trifluoro-5 -nitrobenzene (5 g, 28.2 mmol) and benzyl alcohol (3.2 g, 29.6 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (70 mL). The resultant mixture was stirred at RT overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was separated and washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), concentrated under reduced pressure and purified by column chromatography to give 2-(benzyloxy)-1,3-difluoro-5-nitrobenzene (5.3 g, 71% yield). 1H NMR (400MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 8.15 (d, J= 8.4 Hz, 2 H), 7.46-7.37 (m, 5 H), 5.39 (s, 2 H).
