Steps:
Preparation of N,N,N-trimethyl-1-phenylmethanaminium chloride and bromide(1i-1j)
General procedure: To a 100 mL of round-bottom flask were added a solution of benzyl bromide orchloride (10 mmol, 1 equiv.) in THF (20 mL), and a solution of 33 w% trimethylaminein EtOH (2.9 g, 15 mmol, 1.5 equiv.,) with stirring. The resulting mixture wasstirred at room temperature for 24 h. After the solvent was removed in vacuo, Et2O(40 mL) was added into the mixture. The precipitate was filtered and washed byEt2O(3 × 10 mL), and then, the resulting solid was dried under vacuum to give thewhite solid
