Decahydronaphthalene synthesis

13synthesis methods
Decalin occurs naturally in crude oil and is produced commercially by the catalytic hydrogenation of naphthalene. It is also a product of combustion and is released from natural fires.

Reaction procedure

Hydrogenation reactions were carried out in a 100-ml high-pressure stainless-steel autoclave. A weighed amount of catalyst, reactant, and methanol solvent were placed in the autoclave and flushed three times with nitrogen. After the required temperature had been attained, hydrogen was regulated at certain pressure and introduced into the reactor. The reaction was carried out for certain time at constant temperature and hydrogen pressure. After reaction completion, the reactor was cooled down. The pressure was released slowly, and the contents were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS; HP5890 GC-HP5971 MSD) and quantitatively analyzed by GC-flame ionization detector (FID). For both GC instruments, the column was a 30 m x 0.25 mm i.d. HP-5 capillary column.
