Ethyl 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate can be used as food additives and pharmaceutical intermediates. It can be synthesized by esterification of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and absolute ethanol.

Steps:

Ethyl ethers of 2,4- and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acids (c).

General procedure: The flask containing precursor b synthesized in the previous step was cooled in an ice bath. Then, 15mL of ethanol was added gradually while maintaining the temperature at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 min, and then the excess ethanol was evaporated. The precipitated residue in the flask was washed with a small quantity of cool water and dried. The crude product was then recrystallized from ethanol. Yield 95%.
