Steps:

4.2.1. Synthesis of methyl thymol, 1-isopropyl-2-methoxy-4-methylbenzene(2)
A mixture of thymol 1, (8.0 g, 53 mmol), iodomethane (5.0 mL,80 mmol), and Cs2CO3 (26.0 g, 80 mmol) in anhydrous DMF (30 mL)was heated for 17 h. After cooling, the mixture was poured into water(150 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (3 × 50 mL). The EtOAc solutionwas washed with brine (60 mL), dried with Na2SO4, filtered and concentratedin vacuo. Column chromatography of the residue afforded themethyl ether (2) as a colorless oil (7.69 g, 88%). The NMR data forcompound 2 was in good agreement with literature data [17].
