Steps:

2-(4-Methoxybenzyl)phenol (2b)

A solution of compound 2a (4.00 g, 0.02 mol) in EtOH (8.0 mL) was hydrogenated with 10% Pd/C (5% wet, 4.40 g) overnight at room temperature under 0.4MPa of H2. The Pd/C was removed by filtration, and the filter cake was washed with EtOH threetimes. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by columnchromatography on silica gel (petroleum ether: ethyl acetate = 30: 1, v/v) to afford 2b as a yellowsoild (4.00 g, 95%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ: 7.16-7.09 (m, 4H), 6.90-6.75 (m, 4H), 4.77 (s,1H), 3.98 (s, 2H), 3.82 (s, 3H). The spectroscopic data coincide with the previous report [1].
