with NBS;azobisisobutyronitrile in Carbon tetrachloride at 78; for 2 h;

Steps:

Methyl 5-(bromomethyl)-2-methoxybenzoate (compound 6):

A mixture of compound 5 (3.04 g, 16.84 mmol), NBS (3.84 g, 21.60 mmol) and AIBN (0.15 g, 0.90 mmol) in CCl₄(90 mL) was refluxed at 78°C for 2 h, then the reaction mixture was filtered and the organic layer was concentrated under vacuum to afford yellowish solid as compound 6 in yield 94% (4.36 g). Compound 6 was directly used for the next step without purification.
