소듐 프로피오네이트 C화학적 특성, 용도, 생산
순도시험
(1) 용상 : 이 품목 1g을 물 20mL에 녹일 때, 그 액은 무색으로서 탁도는 약간 미탁 이하이어야 한다.
(2) 유리산 및 유리알칼리 : 이 품목 2g을 새로 끓여서 식힌 물 20mL에 녹이고 페놀프탈레인시액 2방울 및 0.1N 염산 0.3mL를 가할 때, 액은 무색으로 된다. 또 이 액에 0.1N 수산화나트륨용액 0.6mL를 가할 때, 액은 홍색으로 변한다.
(3) 비소 : 이 품목을 비소시험법에 따라 시험할 때, 그 양은 4.0ppm 이하이어야 한다.
(4) 납 : 이 품목 5.0g을 취하여 원자흡광광도법 또는 유도결합플라즈마발광광도법에 따라 시험할 때, 그 양은 5.0ppm 이하이어야 한다.
(5) 철 : 이 품목 5.0g을 취하여 원자흡광광도법 또는 유도결합플라즈마발광광도법에 따라 시험할 때, 그 양은 50ppm 이하이어야 한다.
(6) 수은 : 이 품목을 수은시험법에 따라 시험할 때, 그 양은 1.0ppm 이하이어야 한다.
확인시험
(1) 「프로피온산칼슘」의 확인시험 (1)에 따라 시험한다.
(2) 이 품목은 확인시험법 중 나트륨염의 반응을 나타낸다.
정량법
이 품목을 건조한 다음 약 200mg을 정밀히 달아 빙초산(비수적정용) 50mL에 녹이고 0.1N 과염소산용액으로 적정한다(지시약 : 크리스탈바이올렛․빙초산시액 1방울). 종말점은 액의 자색이 청색을 지나 녹색으로 변하는 점으로 한다. 따로 같은 방법으로 공시험을 한다.

Sodium Propionate is an antimicrobial agent that is the sodium salt of propionic acid. it occurs as colorless, transparent crystals or a gran- ular crystalline powder. it is odorless or has a faint acetic–butyric acid odor, and is deliquescent. it is prepared by neutralizing propionic acid with sodium hydroxide. it is used in baked goods; nonalcoholic beverages; cheeses; confections and frostings; gelatins, puddings, and fillings; jams and jellies; meat products; and soft candy.정의

It is produced by the reaction of propionic acid and sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide.생물학적 활성
If sodium propionate is ingested or applied topically in an acid media, it becomes propionic acid. It oxidizes fatty acids, lowers pH values, and facilitates the citric acid cycle through interaction with coenzyme A. There has been evidence of heightened production of insulin in cows and sheep; the insulin later settles to an overall lower level. Propionic acid inhibits 14CO2 production from palmitate in both control and methylmalonic fibroblasts; propionic acid also inhibited ureagenesis in rat liver slices. These findings may explain the fatty degeneration of the liver and hyperammonemia in propionic and methylmalonic acidemia. Propionic acidemia is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a defect of propionyl–coenzyme A carboxylase. The main clinical findings are vomiting, lethargy, hypotonia, and metabolic ketoacidosis, and early clinical onset occurs during the neonatal period in ～80% of the patients.Safety Profile
