Description

Cord Factor is a glycolipid released from mycobacterium that becomes toxic and antigenic when it interacts with cell surface lipids; it possesses immunomodulatory properties. Cord Factor induces the activation of macrophages, independent of TLR2 or TLR4, to release inflammatory cytokines. It also induces thymic atrophy and granuloma formation in the lung and other organs. It is responsible for the necrosis and cavitation observed in secondary tuberculosis.
