14.A Step A
Methyl 3-iodo-4-hydroxybenzoate (4.1 g, 14.75 mmol) was dissolved in DMF (25 mL). Potassium carbonate (2.65 g, 19.20 mmol) and methyl iodide (3.14 g, 22.12 mmol) were added. The resulting mixture was stirred at 60 ° C for 2 hours. Cooled to room temperature. Water (80 mL) was added. Extraction with ethyl acetate (40 mL x 3). The combined organic phases were washed successively with water (30 mL x 2) and saturated brine (20 mL). Dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. The product was recrystallized from petroleum ether to give methyl 3-iodo-4-methoxybenzoate (37) (3.81 g). The yield was 88.4%.
