Description

Apixaban (Tradename: Eliquis) is a kind of orally-taken, direct, and highly selective factor Xa inhibitor, which can be used as the anticoagulant. It is used for the treatment of venous thromboembolic events, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The anticoagulant effect of apixaban is mediated by directly inhibiting the free and clot-bound factor Xa, which catalyzed the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. It has no direct effect on platelet aggregation.
Factor Xa is an integral enzyme of the coagulation cascade that catalyzes the formation of thrombin. Apixaban is an orally available, selective inhibitor of both free and prothrombinase-bound factor Xa (Ki = 0.8 nM). Apixaban is an effective anticoagulant in both preclinical and clinical models of venous and arterial thrombosis.
